Mumbai, India (AP) India plans to open the first- ever movie theater in the city’s downtown by 2020, marking the first of a series of milestones in its bid to transform Mumbai into a global entertainment capital.
The Mumbai Film and Entertainment Corporation will open the cinema on the site of the old Indian Theatre in December 2020, a spokeswoman said Friday.
The city has been looking to redevelop and open a cinema to attract more foreign films.
Mumbai has about 6.4 million residents, a city of nearly 50 million people.
The entertainment hub has a total of 1,500 theatres and more than 1,300 movie houses.
