A teenage girl who was playing in a backyard of a home in north Las Vegas was shot twice in the leg while she was playing with a toy gun.
Her mother, Aaliyah Mina, said she was in the process of opening a backyard in her home on Friday afternoon when the shooting happened.
Her 13-year-old daughter, Alyssa, was playing on the backyard table when a white SUV pulled up and started yelling at her.
She jumped in the vehicle and drove away, her mother said.
“We were all sitting there talking and laughing,” Mina said.
“We heard a little bit of a commotion.
It sounded like Aaliya had hit something and her mom got out of the car and got out and grabbed the gun.”
Aaliyah said she thought the driver of the SUV, her ex-boyfriend, might be in the house and called 911.
A doctor at Las Vegas Children’s Hospital said Friday that the girl is recovering and is expected to be released later this week.
The girl’s mother said the shooting has affected her family, especially Aaliys’ younger sister, who is autistic.
“It’s going to take a while for them to process it all,” Menna said.
Mina said Aaliyas injuries included a fractured skull and a punctured lung.
